Building permits increased 7.9 percent in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 780,000, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development announced Tuesday. On a year-over-year basis, building permits rose 25 percent above the May 2011 estimate of 624,000.

Single-family housing starts increased 3.2 percent in May to a rate of 516,000 compared with April’s figure of 500,000.
